Twenty minutes south of the Tennessee-Georgia state line sits Blue Ridge, Georgia, one of the hidden gems of the North Georgia Mountains. Blue Ridge has a population of about 1,390 people and borders the north side of Chattahoochee National Forest.
Blue Ridge gets its name from the Blue Ridge portion of the Appalachians. The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to some of the highest elevations east of the Mississippi (the city of Blue Ridge has an elevation of 1,762 feet) and only 1% of Georgia’s useable farmland. Slopes are steep here, and when coupled with an average yearly rainfall of 75 inches, can face a high rate of erosion. The growing season is also a bit on the shorter side. Because of this, farms tend to be small. However, apples are a standby for North Georgia farmers like Mercier Orchards, as is timber. Hardwoods, especially hickory and oak, grow well here.
The soil in Blue Ridge tends to be brown and loamy — a fairly even mixture of sand, silt, and clay. The soil is acidic and has good drainage. Below lies metamorphic volcanic rock like granite and marble, the latter of which is mined by the Georgia Marble Company.
Thanks to its abundant local waterways, like Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa River, Blue Ridge is the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia. But if trout isn’t your fish, there are plenty of bass — largemouth, smallmouth, and white — as well as yellow perch and bluegill.
