Just 20 minutes southwest of Blue Ridge is Ellijay, Georgia. Ellijay is home to about 1,690 people and is on the southwest side of the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Ellijay gets its name from the Cherokee word Elatseyi, which means “new ground” or “new place” (depending on who you ask). The Blue Ridge Mountains where Ellijay is located are home to some of the highest elevations east of the Mississippi. However, the city of Ellijay is on the lower side, with an elevation of 1,280 feet.
Ellijay and the surrounding area has a brown, loamy soil that tends to be a fairly even mix of silt, sand, and clay. It can also be a bit acidic. However, it has good drainage thanks to the underlying layers of granite, marble, and other metamorphic volcanic rocks.
Despite boasting only 1% of Georgia’s useable farmland, Ellijay’s soil, elevation, and climate all combine to make the area a prime location for growing wine grapes. Apples are also a standby crop for North Georgia farmers like R & A Orchards and B.J. Reece Orchards. In fact, Ellijay is known as the Apple Capital of Georgia.
