Two hours northeast of Atlanta and just minutes south of the Georgia-North Carolina border is Hiawassee, Georgia. This lakeside city encompasses 2.2 square miles, 0.5 miles of which is water. Hiawassee also has one of the higher elevations North Georgia towns, sitting at 1,972 feet.
Hiawassee gets its name from the Cherokee (or Creek) word Ayuhwasi, which means “meadow.” This name refers to the surprisingly mild terrain of the town, which is situated in the Hiwassee River basin. Unlike other cities in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hiawassee features plenty of grassy knolls and gentle slopes that lead down toward Lake Chatuge, a large, man-made reservoir lake.
