Jasper, Georgia, is a quickly growing city at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia. Jasper is home to about 3,819 people and is located an hour north of Atlanta.
Jasper is known for its marble, and has been designated the Marble capital of Georgia. Pickens County, where Jasper is located, has a marble vein that runs a half-mile wide, between 5 and 7 miles long, and 2,000 feet deep in some locations. This vein supplied marble for several notable structures, including the New York Stock Exchange and the Lincoln Memorial. It’s also one of the only locations to quarry pink or rose marble, which is extremely rare.
The Jasper area is home to several smaller lakes, including Grandview Lake, Lake Tamarack, and Twin Mountain Lakes, each of which is just a 10- to 20-minute drive from the town center. The area also boasts several smaller rivers, creeks, and streams. Hinton Creek and Long Swamp Creek converge just to the east of town, while Polecat Branch runs into Darnell Lake just 3.5 miles south of Jasper’s town center.
